Question 2 of 8
Taxes and spending
How should West St. Paul balance keeping municipal taxes competitive with maintaining and expanding services? Identify one area of municipal spending you would protect and one you would examine most closely for savings or efficiencies.
- Dan Garcea
Property assessments have increased significantly, and residents are feeling the pressure. As assessments rise, I believe Council must carefully review the mill rate and overall tax burden so residents are not asked to carry more than they can reasonably afford. Strong municipal services and responsible taxation must go hand in hand. It is difficult to only select one area but I believe it would always be what affects the residents quality of life the most. Garbage disposal is what should be maintained at the most convenient level possible, since we use it the most. Seems like a service we take for granted but when you hear from communities that do not have it or cut it back, it is appreciated.

I would prioritize and protect public safety. Our Fire Department must have the training, modern and effective fire fighting apparatus, and medical response equipment needed to serve our growing community. I believe there are opportunities for savings and efficiencies by examining more closely municipal purchasing and contract services. A regular review, or an even an audit of our contract services, competitive bidding, coordinated purchasing can all go a long way to identify savings without reducing service quality to residents. I am committed to protecting essential services and eliminating unnecessary expenditures. This is how to keep municipal taxes affordable for residents.
